This one-day course gives first-time tangueros an introduction to tango, both as a dance form and as a
method of exchanging energy. The morning session begins with mindful walking, mimicking games,
and mirroring exercises to get participants comfortable with the mechanics of “lead” and “follow”.
There is also a sitting meditation. In the afternoon session, tangueros gain a strong enough foundation
to take out onto the dance floor. Participants come away from the workshop with working knowledge of
the basic eight step, forward and backward ochos, and grapevine.
This introductory course emphasizes the following attitudes toward tango:
- Tango is the practice of awareness: of sharing an attentive experience with another human being.
- When you are aware of your body, you become a wonderful dance partner. You give yourself and
your partner a truer experience.
- In tango, leading and following is really about projecting and receiving energy. The lead has the
job of projecting a clear energy. The partner senses and receives on the other end. Both people
can do this without judgment.
- Tango teaches people how to be perceptive of each other. They are always listening to each other
and adjusting to each other.
